Family Therapy

Therapy for Families — Built Around Your Home

Transforming family dynamics through mutual understanding, structured support, and lasting connection.

When one person in the family is struggling, everyone feels it. The same dinner table that used to feel ordinary becomes a daily test of patience. The bedtime routine that worked last year doesn't anymore. And nobody quite knows where to start.

Family therapy at So You Need Therapy is a space where the whole family can slow down — to understand the patterns, the stress responses, and the unspoken expectations that shape how you move through life together. We offer family therapy in Toronto, in-person at Liberty Village or Don Mills, or virtually wherever you are.

Family therapy at So You Need Therapy's Toronto clinic — neurodiversity-informed, systems-based therapy for families

Family can be complicated — and change is still possible.

A family is a delicate ecosystem; when one person struggles, the ripple effect is felt by everyone. Whether you're navigating a neurodivergent household, breaking out of high-conflict cycles, or weathering a major life change, our family therapy provides the neutral ground your family needs to move from a state of 'reaction' to one of collaboration.

Our goal isn't to assign blame or pathologize anyone in the family — it's to help every family member feel seen, respected, and supported within the home.

Family Therapy at Every Stage

Specialized Care for Every Stage of Family Life

Family therapy looks different at every stage of family life. Our therapists provide stage-appropriate care tailored to the specific tensions and questions of where your family is now:

Early Childhood (Ages 0–6)

Support for families in the early-childhood years — when sleep, identity shifts, partnership strain, and early signs of neurodivergence can all hit at once. We help you find footing in the version of family life that isn't just survival mode.

School-Age & Tweens (Ages 7–12)

Therapy for families navigating school-age challenges — academic struggles, emerging neurodivergence, social and sibling dynamics, and parenting approaches that need adjusting as your kids grow.

Teens & Young Adults (Ages 13–25)

Support for families in the teen and young-adult years — adolescent mental health, identity exploration, late-emerging neurodivergence, and the work of staying connected through separation and individuation.

Adult Children & Aging Parents

Therapy for families redrawing the map — adult-child relationships finding their adult shape, estrangement and reconnection, and the layered work of caregiving for aging parents alongside your own life.

The Dynamics We Navigate Together

A Roadmap to Family Harmony

Understanding the Ecosystem

Understanding the Ecosystem

We identify the unique roles, communication patterns, and 'invisible' stressors that are keeping your family stuck in a cycle of conflict. Using a Systems-informed approach, we look at how each member's neurotype and history impact the group to build empathy and reduce blame.

Building Practical Structure

Building Practical Structure

Life in a busy household requires more than just conversation; it requires systems. We help families implement structured communication tools and 'brain-informed' household routines. By integrating Somatic regulation, we help family members notice when the 'collective temperature' is rising and provide tools to cool it down before conflict escalates.

Strengthening Long-Term Bonds

Strengthening Long-Term Bonds

Therapy is about creating a sustainable future. We work on repair-focused communication and healthy boundary-setting to give your family steadier footing for whatever comes next — with a shared sense of what you’re building together.

Common Questions About Family Therapy

Clear Answers About Family Therapy

We offer both. Most families work with us virtually for flexibility, but in-person sessions are available at our Liberty Village or Don Mills locations in Toronto. Your therapist will confirm what's available when you book.

Not always. Some sessions work best with the whole family present, while others may focus on specific relationships (like caregivers, or specific siblings). Your therapist will guide the structure based on your family's specific goals.

This is very common — and often a sign that someone is overwhelmed, not that they don't care. Therapy can begin with the family members who are ready. As trust builds, hesitant members often join when they feel less pressure. Your therapist can also coach the rest of the family on how to invite (not pressure) participation.

Our approach recognizes that family dynamics are shaped by differences in emotional regulation, sensory needs, and nervous system responses. We focus less on assigning blame and more on understanding the patterns underneath behaviour — and creating practical support that works for how your family actually lives.

In most cases, yes. Most extended health insurance plans in Ontario cover therapy provided by a Registered Psychotherapist or Social Worker. We provide professional receipts you can submit for reimbursement. Coverage details vary by plan — we always recommend confirming with your provider before booking. (See the Pricing section above for full session rates.)
